Problem Finding ToolTip/HoverOver Objects

Hi Levi,



You can use the Object Spy's Point and fix to catch this popup and identify what object you need to use.



OR



You Can use Title Method  in Coding to get tool tips.

Thanks so much for your response.



I do use the Object Spy's Point and fix. Normally that does the trick but in this case it is still not enough. It does not work in this case because as soon as I move my mouse down to try and select the object I want, that object disappears. So I am never able to use Point and fix to select that object.



As far as the title method is concerned. I don't appear to have the title method on the parent object of the popup object. 



I checked for the title method in the object browser of the parent object. I ran a search for title in the methods, Fields, and Properties tab and found no results. I also just tried to use the title method on my object without success.



My real aim here is to find out how to locate these types of popup/tooltip objects. I know it is possible because whoever wrote this script before me was able to find it and was able to use the GetText() method to get the contents of that object.



However, I was unable to use Object Spy's Point and fix to grab that object myself. I was also unable to find that object in the object browser. I need to learn what they did to get this object so i can repeat those steps for future cases where I need to deal with these types of objects.

I've occasionally had this problem too (move pointer to get popup, but popup disappears once you exit the text).  Sometimes, there is a very small area you can traverse from the text to the popup, often at the lower left corner of the text, or a short delay in which you can rush to the popup object before it disappears.  If not, here is a very roundabout solution I've found:



- Open TestComplete.

- Make certain you are displaying the "Save/Load Snapsnots" toolbar.  You can do this by right-clicking a toolbar and checking that option.

- Display Object Browser tab in TestComplete.

- Open application side-by-side with TestComplete window.

- Highlight the the parent in the Object Browser tree under which you think the popup will appear.  Try to get the closest parent possible.

- Click the "Save Object Snapshot" button on the toolbar.  This brings up a window to set up the snapshot.  Browse to make a file name and check off the information you need to save.  Only save what is absolutely necessary, otherwise, this can take forever.  I usually do "Default and additional properties" and then manually add the extra properties I want captured, like "contentText" or such.  Make sure the "Save child objects recursively" option is checked to capture the child popup.

- Keeping the TestComplete window active, place mouse pointer over text in application to generate popup, then hit the Enter key to trigger the Save Object Snapshot action.  Leave mouse pointer in place over hover text while TestComplete saves the object snapshot.  You can then use "Load Snapshot" to open the snapshot and find your popup object.



You may need to hover and wait a bit for the tree to update before hitting Enter if you don't manage to capture the desired popup the first time.  If anyone else has come up with a good way to find objects that you can place the mouse pointer over, let me know...

I promise you that I have used both "Drag the target to point to the object" and "Point and Fix." I'm very familiar with both of those items. I understand that using Point and Fix allows you to select certain objects when you hit Control-Shift-A. I have used Point and Fix many times. Usually for menu items or sometimes tooltips that allow you to hover over them and select them.



However, In this particular case even when using "Point and fix" I can not select the object because as soon as I move my mouse towards it, it disappears.

Thanks for the interesting idea on the fix. I will certainly look into that as it may come in handy at some point.



My Solution:

I have come to a solution with my problem that invovles the Find method. What I did was run a find for the text that exists in the popup when I expect the popup to appear. I used the name property and then used the text I was seeing in the popup as the property value. I put wild cards (*) around the text knowing that the name would contain more info then the text itself. This worked perfectly. The Find returns the object I need without any hassle.

I didn't realize this was considered a problem worth contacting support over.

It does not seem like it is SmartBears fault because some other programs popup window won't let you move your mouse over it. 

Perhaps my explanation was not that good.

I have created a video for you to look at instead.

If you think the behavior in the video is not expected then I will write a support ticket.

Could I send it to you in an email or do you have another idea? I don't want to open a support ticket until you can see what it is i'm seeing. I have a feeling I'm just not explaining it right so it sounds like a bug.

I tried to replicate your steps. I can see what your doing there and it is very clever. I was unable to get it to work after a few attempts. I was only ever able to capture the parent object to the tooltip I am looking for. I think the method I created actually works a bit better and is easier to use. I hope you give my way a try as I think you may be happy with it. Here is the basic idea behind what I did and it works really well.

Delay(1000);

var toolTip = Sys.Process("devenv").Find("Name", "*"+nameToSearch+"*", 1000);

Thanks, Levi.  I'm sorry that it did not work for you.  I think your find method works well in certain circumstances, but there are many situations in my application where multiple items contain the same text or I don't really know what object/property I am looking for.  In those cases it is a lot more helpful for me to be able to take a snapshot of the entire object tree to browse through.

I went ahead and contacted support about the issue.

I was able to send them a video of what I'm seeing so hopfully they will have a better understanding of what's going on. I assumed this issue was normal so I never thought of contacting support before.

My solution to the problem does work fine but if I really am seeing a bug I'd like to get that solved.
