TestComplete 7.52 patched hangs on startup - Win7 x64 new installation

Week before last we had consecutive power spikes and an outage here that my UPS didn't handle and I lost one of my test platforms.  Yay for fallen trees!  I had been using TC on this Win7x64 machine, no problems.

I've rebuilt that OS and was using TC again.  However, rather suddenly, TC has stopped launching properly and hangs during the splash screen.  I've tried reinstalls, repairs, reboots, manual clean of folders and registry, nothing seems to clear the issue.  By guess alone, TC seems to be hung just before it should be loading the Start Page.  The Project Explorer is displayed but not populated and the controls are disabled, the Workspace only contains the Start Page but it is not populated either.  The application window is unresponsive, and the splash screen is still displayed behind it.  Clicking anywhere on the application window will cause the OS to step in and handle the unresponsive application.

The last thing I remember doing was changing the shortcut to run as an administrator because TC was having trouble launching our AUT properly.  I closed TC, modified the shortcut, and launched.  That was the first time it hung.  I've launched in normal run time as well, with no result.

Any ideas?

    Hi guys.

Wondering if there was a resolution to the problem described above?  I'm experiencing the same issue.

    Cheers.

  • Hi Owen,

The problem Russell faced should not appear in the latest TC version (which is 8.20 currently). As for TC 7, we are aware of the following workarounds that may help:

    1. Use the following command to launch TC:

    for a 64-bit OS:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Automated QA\TestComplete 7\Bin\TestComplete.exe" /ns

    for a 32-bit OS:

    "C:\Program Files\Automated QA\TestComplete 7\Bin\TestComplete.exe" /ns

    2. Run TC in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
  • Owen,

Ultimately the fix was to upgrade to TC8, the issue has been corrected in that release.  I'd actually recommend it there were many benefits we received by upgrading, one of the biggest for us was better project load times.  Our projects were actually overloaded and it helped tremendously.

The workarounds that Alex has given you were not available at the time I was running into the issue, so I can't comment on those.  Best of luck to you.

    Hi Alex and Russ.

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

I created a shortcut using the /ns (no splash?) option and setting compatibility mode for XP and TestComplete launched without problem.

Funnily enough, I can now successfully launch the application using the original shortcut - maybe something has now been set/registered that wasn't done so upon first start up.

    Cheers.

    Owen.
