I have a test environment that has both TestExecute and TestComplete installed. I use connected applications technology to use the TestComplete engine to run my tests. But is there a way to tell the engine to use TestExecute rather than tie up a TestComplete license? I want to ensure the few TestComplete licenses we have are available when writing new tests whereas the TestExecute license is for the test environment only. But I want to keep TestComplete installed on the test environment in case I ever need to use it on there. Is there a way to set the order in which the licenses should be used?

Thanks Simon. But I run my tests via Visual Studio rather than command line. My test code is all in VS which builds me an executable, which I could then run but I generally just run the exe via VS. Do I need to add command line arguments to the VS project?

Hi Mat,I am not sure what you are trying to do. Do you have the Visual Studio Integration (here) ? It is only available with TestComplete Enterprise.With it you could select any test runner (see attached screenshot).Sincerely

It is my guess that you are instantiating the instance of 'TestComplete.Application'm in your code.

If my guess is correct, then you must change it to 'TestExecute.Application'.

A license is locked based on the running application.

Just invoking the right application from the command line should fix your problem. Check here. The command line arguments are the same for TestComplete and TestExecute.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone. I guess I had better try to explain my set up better to help us hopefully move towards a solution.All my test code is written in C# in Visual Studio. Each test is in a separate class. Each class includes the AutomatedQA.TestComplete and AutomatedQA.script libraries and each class extends the Connect class. Tests are started with the Connect.RunTest method and end with a call to Connect.StopTest. I don't explicitly start the TestComplete application.

Hi Mat,

I guess that you just need to specify which license to use. You can do this on the http://localhost:1947/_int_/config_to.html page. Read the "Specifying License Manager for Connection" article for more information.

Interesting idea Tanya, thanks for that. But to make sure I understand you correctly are you suggesting the TestExecute license should be on a different license manager to the TestComplete licenses? Then on my test environment I set the license configuration to search for the TestExecute license ahead of the TestComplete license? Of course, I can then swap the order of the license configurations on the test environment if I do want to use TestComplete.
