If it's a disk space issue, there must be some way to make some by moving unrelated files ;-).
If it's a disk access timeout issue because to the name mapping file size, you have a ressource issue.
I am not sure how the project type might change (shared or not) and impact the project variables so I would first try to have better access to the shared drive. If that fails, well, move the project to a local drive, do the name mapping configuration changes and move it back. Before doing that I would make a project backup ;-)
