Most optimal monitor resolution for test engineer

I've been tasked with writing up equipment purchase requirements for a test engineer who will spend most of his time using TestComplete.

Elsewhere on SmartBear's website it is clearly stated that: "1280 × 1024 or higher resolution monitor" is recommended.

I'm not questioning that TestComplete doesn't operate well at this resolution, but it seems rather low.

I would like to know in which resolution current users of TestComplete feel is most optimal for productive use.

Thank you for your feedback.

  • Well, I don't know what resolutions options you have available to you, but I'd suggest *at least* 2 monitors to be productive.

    Hi Alexander,

The case here is that you should consider that you will work not only with TestComplete but with your tested application on the same machine.

This means that while for the comfortable work with TestComplete itself as with IDE the more resolution the better (and to have dual monitor setup, as Nick mentioned, is great as well), there may be a requirement for the tested application that it must operate on the low-resolution (small) monitors. This means that you will have to run tests with low resolution and there is a chance that test(s) will fail and you will have to debug them using the same low resolution. And in this case the ability of TestComplete to work on low resolutions may appear to be very handy (if not essential).

I use 2x 1920x1080 23" and I wouldn't think of ever working on one (or even two) 5:4 monitors. You need the screen space... It's not just TestComplete, it's VMWare, all your management tools, calculator, Notepad++, web browser, etc... They will all be opened 100% of the time the person will be working on it. I could even use a third of those 23".

We use VMs for all the test machines here, and we test the application in 1024x768. TestExecute doesn't care what resolution you use. TestComplete runs full screen in 1920x1080.
