I am looking forward to learn TestComplete need to understand the approach to learn it? Need Help!!

I have been trying to learn Test Complete.Need to know are there any pre conditions before we start automation using Test Complete? How can we make most out of this tool?

    One note that I will give is that the tool is as good as you make it, much like any test automation tool.  There are quick and easy ways of making automated test scenarios and there are more complex ways. Depending upon your individual skill-set, there are any number of ways of implementing any number of methods of testing. As has been mentioned, there are tutorials both in video form as well as in the walk-throughs available in the documentation.

     

    As for pre-conditions, a couple of hints:

    1) There is nothing specific that you need to do to start using TC to test your applications. Even if it is not an "open application", TestComplete can interact with it. So, out of the box, you should immediately be able to start recording and creating tests.

    2) However, learn some very basic coding. What language you decide on is of no matter, but it does help to be able to make good, robust, sustainable tests if you know some of the basics of code logic, conditional statements, etc. Even if you are only going to use keyword tests, this does help to be able to build robust, bullet-proof test scenarios.

    3) Start with recording... but don't stay there. Record and playback is good to get things started but, especially for large Applications Under Test and large test projects, it is not sustainable in the long run. Invest time and effort in building good, robust frameworks in which to execute your tests.

    4) NAMEMAPPING!!!! Seriously, dive into this part of the tool, learn it well, learn how to do good stuff with it.  It will save your hide 5 ways to Sunday.

     

    That's basically it... of course, if you run into trouble or problems, the community is here with lots of helpful folks like Colin_McCrae, AlexKaras and many others. And the community forums are populated with SmartBear staff as well so there are REALLY good experts floating around.

      I would say 'ALIASES based on the proper namemapping'. Aliases give you better flexibility. With aliases and namemapping made properly, quite often, when the tested application changes, it is enough to adjust just a namemapping, leaving aliases (and thus test code) as they were, without any changes.
