I also failed to get the How To script up and running. Possibly, Gmail settings have been changed since 11/1/2010, or the description misses a requirement. I've added a task to fix the article to our task list.
As for the FromHost parameter, it defines the address of the SMTP server. As for examples of sending e-mails, does the function Vince provided works for you? Also, you can find a similar example in this thread.
