I had the wrong settings for gmail so I got it work. I still have question 1 though.
Could you tell me how you got gmail to work? I'm getting an error when setting it up. I've enabled pop, and used the port as per gmail instructions here: https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/6323470 What could be wrong?

Which indicates I'm using the wrong password. I've verified that the password is correct by logging into the gmail user account. So, I'm out of ideas :)

I have just checked this setup for "gmail.com" and it correctly works. Most probably, the problem is on your account security level. Please try to use the tips below:
* Go to http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and click continue (this will grant access for 10 minutes for registering new apps).
* If the first tip doesn't help, try to check the access option for apps.
