Description.TCLog file not found

During playing back automated scripts, TestComplete interacts with application under test (AUT) and most probably either of them (or both) have memory leaks. It causes that applications require more and more memory and that's why in the end you get such error messages.



Here are some tips which can help you.

1. Save logs during scripts run (right click on project name, Edit - Properties - Playback, option "Save log every ... minutes", see attachment)


2. Split you tests into several parts and run them separately, restarting TestComplete for running every part. The best way to do this is running TestComplete scripts from the command line (see help topic "TestComplete Command Line", useful options for you are /run, /exit, /SilentMode)


3. Restart you AUT at the beginning of every test

   Thanks for the solution. With reference to memory leak, I am calling some methods Asynchronously several times in my scripts and not waiting for completion of them, as they are related to modal windows and I expect them to terminate once the modal window is disposed. Can this be the cause of memory leak? I restart my AUT after the specifice number of test cases (say 10-12 test cases).Also can you tell me the reason behind creation of temporary files in Temp folder?(since the size goes around 8-10 GB I am little worried on this side). Thanks for your help.

No, sorry, I am not aware of the reasons of creating so big temporary files. I have several guesses though:

• These files are generated by TestComplete. In this case only guys from AQA support can help you investigate this


• These files are generated by your AUT. Then only developers of your application can help


• These files are generated by .NET assemblies or other Windows libraries. I have no idea who can help here :)

The only one thing I can say, that since TestComplete 4.0 I split my tests so that each launch of TestComplete doesn't take more than half an hour and usually I don't have any problems.



As for restarting AUT - it is a good practice to restart it at the beginning of each test, because each test must be "sure" that application is up an running and is in the "initial" state (e.g. user is logged in, all additional messages are processed and closed, etc.)

I guess TestComplete is generating these temporary files since the name of the files start with tc_, while some files start with tmp(some digit(s)) which are of larger sizes (100 MB or so). Not sure which application is creating such a large temp files :-(

If some of the files are generated by TestComplete, then probably these files are logs and if you turn on option "Save log files every ... minutes" then you'll get rid of them...

I have made changes to project properties to save the Log file after every 30 minutes. However I am not sure where these files will be saved and how can I make use of them to see the status. Can I open them with TestComplete?

Right click on project name, Edit - Properties - General - Log location



This is where your logs are saved.



You can see them in the TestComplete window, Project Explorer pane (see help topic "Viewing Available Test Results" for details)

Hi,

   With respect to execution of test scripts from CLI, can I run the scripts from a particular folder. For e.g. in my test suite I have created different folders say Component1, Component2 and so on. For each folder there are sub-folders say sub-component1, sub-component2 and so on, and within each sub-folder there are actual test scripts. Also some test scripts have some children test item. Considering the above setup how can I execute a set of test cases under a particular folder?



Component1

       Sub-Component1

               Parent Test Case Script

                      Child Test Case 1

                      Child Test Case 2



Considering the above scenario, can you tell me the CLI command which will execute Parent Test Case Script, Child Test Case 1 and

Child Test Case 2?

AFAIK, you have to create a function and call all necessary  subroutines from it. After that just pass the name of the created function in command line.



I mean, as far as I know there is no way to call all tests from a particular folder in a project.

I have tried running the tests (in parts) through testcomplete CLI - I also made sure to close/reopen the AUT/testcomplete. So it looks like I can run the tests in this way.



However, by using CLI method,

I am  unable to use the ‘test suite creation’ feature of
testcomplete- this feature allows to block the child tests if the parent test
is failed, or I can select/deselect the tests as required etc. So rework will be needed to current scripts in this case to accommodate this change/logic- if testsuite needs to run
using testcomplete CLI.




Is there any way by which we can achieve this from testcomplete UI, that means - closing the testcomplete (exit) and reopening it by resuming the tests from where testcomplete was exited from the specified folder in the testsuite.
