data import from excel

i am trying to import data from an excel sheet where some of the imported cells are empty as they are not mandatory in the WSDL.
soapui always returns an error: The value '' cannot be parsed as the type ....

can i set a filter or something like EMPTY in the excel so that a really empty value is passed to the service from soapui?
