Hi Tanya,
Nor the 'displayed value' property (which doesn't exist) or the width property helped me in this case.
The idea is to control wether a label content is being shown completely.
For example:
and so on (there's also Spanish, Portuguese one more I can't recall now)
The idea is to make sure all of them are readable (not trimmed), does it make sense?
It also applies to tooltips, button names, column headers, etc.

the English date would be: "Thursday 6 November 2014" (24 chars)
the German date would be: "Donnerstag 6. November 2014" (27 chars, google translate sorry if wrong)
and the French date would be: "Jeudi 6 Novembre 2014" (21 chars, again google translate)
and so on (there's also Spanish, Portuguese one more I can't recall now)
