For the first point, the browser test; can you confirm no other instances of the same browser are open while you're recording this?
For the desktop app/tree node, try enabling Text Recognition on the window.
Use the Object Spy to get the WndClass property of the dropdown list, add it to the list of accepted windows in Tools > Current Project Properties > Open Applications > Text Recognition.
