How can I share state (local variable) between steps in Test Complete?

To share between tests in the same project, use a Project variable. To share between projects in the same suite, use a Project Suite variable.
I would not like to resort to the project variable mechanism, is there any other way to solve this problem?

Is there any reason why you don't want to use variables? Could you please explain what you are trying to achieve in details? Perhaps, we can suggest more solutions.

You can use parameters if the tests are in the same project.
