Hi,
This may be too late but I hope would be useful.
The another way to keep test running even after IE stops or crashes is to detect this event and add handler to this event.
Whenever there is crash in IE or it stops responding the process named 'werfault' exists in the system and after certain timeout we can detect this if IE actually crashed or stopped working. I have implemented this approach and after I am able to run the my test suite of around 200 tests even if browser crashes with restarting it in the same event.
