soapUI - GUI is not displaying anything

I have installed the windows installer version from soapUI-x32-3_5.exe ( I also tried with soapui-3.5-win32-standalone-bin.zip with my JAVA_HOME pointing to jdk1.6.0_14 with the same results). I have not tried installing the professional 30 day trial version.
The problem feels like the UI is missing paint events. The menu items and pop-ups work fine ... they just don't show the text. I also noticed if I do something from the file system like Import Project ... that the "Look in:" drop down list that should show the file system structure has the same behavior (i.e. not displaying the text). Also context menus (right click) have the same symptom.
I discovered that this issue goes away once I open a project (i.e. viewer is displayed in right window) ... namely I can see the text on all menus and pop-ups. (I currently have the install from soapUI-x32-3_5.exe). For me, this make this issue a nuisance since I normally have projects open with either an editor or a viewer in ther right window.
