We have about 140 persistent variables and we've never had any trouble adding them. I agree with tristaanogre here. You shouldn't need them for name mapping at all, and you really don't want to start out one way and then have to change it later. Make the time now to do your name mapping the right way or you will likely regret down the road.
p.s. tristaanogre weren't you going to fix up that script extension from the contest that exported/imported persistent variables? Hint hint. :)
Try this one. I made a few corrections to exclude the variable types that weren't supported by the script extension.

Hi,
While I also agree that a large number of project variables is not a good thing... In certain situations, when I do not need data persistence, but need to preserve a reasonable amount of data within test run (for example, to exchange data between different test items), I use temporary variable(s) of Table type. One column is usually used as a key (or variable name) and another column contains actual data.
