I was able to figure out what was giving me problems when trying to verify the host machine so in case anyone else runs into this issue, here is what I changed.
There are two settings in the local group policy that I needed to change.
The one indicated in this link was already set to disabled:

However, 'Always prompt for password upon connection' listed under:
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Remote Desktop Services | Remote Desktop Session Host | Security was enabled. When I changed this to disabled I was able to successfully verify the host.
