this definitely sounds like a possible approach; you could write the expected response to a Property in a Properties TestStep and then do the comparison using either a groovy script or a standard xpath-contains assertion (if the response is an xml message).
One thing I wonder about is how to create the expected response from the DataSource given that it might come from multiple rows in your excel file.. could you elaborate a little on this so we can guide you?
