This morning I had some more time to investigate. I've got a work around for me for now.
After starting up soapUI
Cancel the Import settings window
Upload the license in the next window
Click OK on remaining windows
On the Main soapUI screen click File > Switch Workspace
Navigate to the correct XML file open it and start working
