The stale connection check is usually really fast. The time for the doing the stale connection check is not the time between the previous log line and the stale connection log line. Logging "Stale connection check" is done before the actual check is done.
The delay you see in the logs are mostly consumed by doing the actual request.
If you are using the proxy setting Automatic you could set the setting to None instead (given that you are not actually using a proxy). This can reduce an unnecessary delay for some users running 4.6.2 or 4.6.3, depending on environment and proxy settings in the operating system.
