Is there a way to get the logArea of the TestCase Log i.e. the equivalent to def logArea = com.eviware.soapui.SoapUI.logMonitor.getLogArea( "script log" ) This doesn't work for me def logArea ...

That is not possible unfortunately, as the TestCase log is a view rather than a proper log, as explained in this forum post, along with the suggestion on how you can use the information displayed in the TestCase log: http://forum.loadui.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1712
