Looks like this turned out to be a firewall issue.
I launched the client specifying two ports \ http and https >
./loadUI-agent.sh -Dloadui.https.port=4711 -Dloadui.http.port=1337
In addition to opening the ports 4711 and 1337 I also needed to open 'UDP' port 13572, for agent discovery.
Bottom line is this, in troubleshooting I should have turned my firewall off. Duh..
The agents are now able to connect!!
