Is there a report that can tell me how much time an individual tester has spent per day?
And also is there any documentation that will help me understand how the time and effort reports are generated?

The "Test execution effort over time" report seems to have what you want, as long as testers use the timer feature on every test they execute.
If you choose the Custom Query filter option that will give you the most options to query, for example, in the image below:
1) You could choose to report by a specific test cycle, or a group of test cycles grouped under a test plan
2) You can also select specific tester(s) to report against
3) And select to see data represented for each Day
