I've installed soapUI v3.0.2 and repeated the process but got the same error.
I now realise that the problem was due to a non-xml file being present in the folder referenced by my Schema directory path in my WSDL settings under my soapUI Preferences. ie soapUI processes these files even when you aren't pointing at the folder to import the WSDL file.
Perhaps something to check for when users have problems with WSDL files that look fine.
