Setting.xml and composite projects??

Trying to get a definitive description of the settings.xml file, in particular the Project/TestSuite/TestCase usages.
What are the values stored in them?
How are the values added?
Where are the values defined?
Why do the files grow with duplicate line entries.
Why do the files grow to 1.3 gb or higher?
