It seems as if that driver may have some problems, at least when connecting to a SQLServer 2000 instance (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... -data-type).
Which version of SQLServer are you using?
Can you try the jTDS driver and see if you get the same problem? You can find it here: http://jtds.sourceforge.net/
