I've now confirmed that this happens in soapUI Pro 4.5.0 and 4.0.0 (possibly earlier as well). It only happens if Start Row of the DataSource is set to 1 (or higher) — if set to 0, it works fine. It also works fine, as you mentioned, when checking Preload.
I've reported this as a major bug in our backlog [SOAPUI-4054].
