How can i create Xpath in soapui

I am beginner using soapui tool.
(1)Unfortunately i couldn't be able to create XPath assertion for the sample project available in the Tutorial.While i am creating the XPath assertion ,by clicking on 'declare' i can see the XPath expression .But while I am clicking on 'select from current' it shows an error like
java.lang.RuntimeException: net.sf.saxon.trans.XPathException: XPath syntax error at char 0 in {}: Unexpected token " " in path expression
So please let me know how can i create XPath assertion .
I do have an another doubt.
(2)How can i create user defined response for a request .e.g. if i want to give response text like "Datas are not provided" ,where login id & password (suppose) are not provided.
