Get and Set Return Properties causes problems?

The Return Properties option for the properties in Run TestCase steps can cause difficulties if I want to set a value into a property and then get that value from that property later on in a test. It can only be either or at the minute. Or is there a way I don't know of where I can set a value into a property AND get it also
