XML files contain all NUL

I received an error when opening SOAP (unfortunately I didn't get a screen capture of the error, but it told me I needed to create a new workspace because of an error with my old workspace). After I did this, several of my xml project files were overwritten and now contain a long string of "NUL"s. Has anyone else seen this issue? If so, were you able to find a way to recover the project files?
