SOLUTION: Problems adding listeners

...could really use some updating.
As others have pointed out, the signatures are out of date. Also, nowhere does it mention that the extension XML files have to be suffixed with "-listeners". I had my file named "something-listener.xml" and it wasn't loaded. It was a difficult problem to track down, given that the documentation does not mention that, but I eventually just up and looked at the source:
