REST calls slow response when using self signed SSL cert

Question

We're having a response problem with REST calls to a apache http proxy with self signed certificate. Behind this apache http proxy is a jboss server installed on the same machine (plain http). Doing a REST call via apache http proxy with SSL takes 4,5s and bypassing apache http proxy without SSL takes 0,4s. The client (where soapUI is run from) and the server are not connected to internet. Both machines are located within the same subnet.

We have a maximum response time of 4s. Why does it take so long with SSL? What can i do to fix this?

Ok, i have a workaround for my problem. There is a netbios reverse lookup which it cannot complete. Also see this post below.

I just edited the hosts file (on windows) and added the machine i was trying to connect to (e.g. <ip> <netbios name> )
