Correctly identifying disabled buttons

Hi,

Our web software is mostly user permission based. Based on your defined permissions you will see either a full list of options on the menus and screens or a limited number of options. What is the best method to test when buttons or properties are not displayed after a user profile is downgraded or buttons and properties are now displayed after a user profile is upgraded?
