Can you not just check/uncheck the execution status values that are of interest to you?

If a case has both a FAIL and a PASS execution, I don't want it to be returned when I search for FAIL executions.

I think I see what you mean. I could do something like that in SQL with a nested query or a join. It seems to be a bit more tricky in JQL. There's mention of it here...
