There are many many things that could cause an increase in CPU usage.
- What are the specs of the machine you're running on?
- What OS are you running?
- Is there anti-virus running on the machine?
- What version of test complete?
- What application type?
- If web, what browser and version?
- Are you using a lot of extended finds in your scripts?
- Does this happen randomly or in many areas of your tests?
- Have you tried disabling all unused extensions in test complete?

Its windows 7 professional 32-bit OS, having 4GB RAM. I am using Testcomplete 12.20. And the application is a java based one. The test execute is taking maximum cpu usage at times while the test is running. This happens in the vm's.

You're running this in a VM I take it? Are you hosting the VM from your local computer or is it hosted on a VM server? 32-bit / 4GB makes me thing it's a pretty underpowered setup, and Java is known to be pretty resource heavy on it's own.
