Response parameter (save to variable set) but not recognized by validation

I am using LoadWebUI 2.99.4592.23 and am trying to validate the resposne that comes back from a HTTP Request. The response content type is text/aml;charset=utf-8.
I have followed the user documentation and set the Save To Variable column in the Parameters tab of the response.
I then go the the validation tab of the reposnse and add a new item. my new variable appears in the drop down list which I select. I then do a valiadtionj of that variable equal to some text that I add to the value cloumn. When I verify the scenario I get an error message indicating that the variable I set in teh parameters tab was not initialized with any value.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated to get this to valiadte correctly.
