how to grab acct # from response and then alter status value for that acct!

Hello! I need help with something that is probably pretty easy for most users but for some reason it eludes me!  I have a fetch request that returns a specific id for an account that meets certain filter criteria. I then want to issue a request that will, for that returned account account, change the value of the status field. Can someone please cut and paste an analogous example of how to accomplish this....would I use property expansions? if so I guess I need an example to drive this concept home for me!!
