Custom Fields - How to Make Required or Optional

How does one designate a new custom field to be required versus optional?

  • Hi Brett,



    I see that your question was posted some time ago, but I figured it would be good to have an answer in this thread.



    To make a custom field a required field instead of an optional field:



    1. Navigate to the Setup Tab

    2. Click on "System Configuration" which will expand to Screen Layouts

    3. Select the area you want to add the custom field to (my example is Test Library)

    4. Click on the Custom Field link up that the top and add your custom field, click on the submit button, finally select "Return to Listing"

    5. Navigate to the Required Fields Tab

    6. Select your custom field from the "Non-Required Fields" column and press the "Add >" button to move it to the "Required Fields" column.

    6a. You can adjust where the custom field position will be by selecting the "Add/Edit" tab selecting the custom field from the "Selected Fields" column and click the

    "Move Up" or "Move Down" buttons. 

    7. You can now verify that the custom field is now required, by navigating to Test library, you can edit an existing test or create a new test and you will see a red asterisk by the custom field.
